It is hard to imagine that if 40 years ago, by listening a new band from Switzerland, with a raw sound, dissonant riffs, strange clothes and with lyrics about death, occultism and gore we could imagine that this same band will become a reference for an entire musical scene, particularly to Black Metal, and that this band will perform in front of thousands of people, yes, we will not believe it.
Hellhammer was created back in 1982, and it was alive for only two years, at least with that name, then from its ashes Celtic Frost will appear, and then, suddenly, CF will also perish and Triptykon will be rising.
However, the mastermind of these three musical icons and legends within the metal music, Tom Gabriel Fischer will never forget his origins, and by vox populi, Tom G. Warrior will take those ashes from 1982 to give them shape, and then for the properly live execution under the moniker, Triumph Of Death.
Triumph Of Death is not a band that creates new music, it is the band of Tom G. Warrior with the duty of execute the hymns that Hellhammer created between 1982 and 1984, indeed “Triumph Of Death” was the second demo by Hellhammer released in 1983.
With “Resurrection Of The Flesh” the expectations were confusing, normally the live executions used to have some failures, human common failures, also it is known that some bands record some previous version alive and then, polish or re-work some parts at the studio, that in stricto sensu it is no longer a live album.
However, for this live album, Triumph Of Death set the standard high, the recording is superb, and with superb I do not to mean, polish or perfect, it is simply a quality recording in which you can admire the talent of the audio engineers and of course the magic touch of Tom at the post-production.
“Resurrection Of The Flesh” was not play, re-recorded or fix in any way at the studio, and it is visible with the changes at Tom’s vocal approach, along with some tempos within the riffs, so these details make a live album perfect.
Songs as “Blood Insanity” provokes you to feel the gig, like it was, like if you were there and explode with those blast beats and with the broken and raw riffs very characteristics of Hellhammer.
“Crucifixion”, “Revelations Of Doom”, “Messiah” and “Triumph Of Death”, all of them classics in the metal scene, sounds organic, vivish, and raw at “Resurrection Of The Flesh”, you can denote the complicity between the musicians, and Tom’s passion while he executes those songs that he composed when was barely 19 years old.
“Resurrection Of The Flesh” was recorded in three different places and in three different moments, (“Hell’s Heroes Festival” at Houston, US; “Dark Easter Metal Meeting” at Munich, Germany; and “SWR Barroselas Metal Fest” in Portugal), throughout the recordings you can not perceive any change in the energy and the essence of the musicians. You can go further within the details of the live album, along with Tom’s vision at the interview I did to Tom through Mariskalrock and the Spanish magazine, “La Heavy”.
Triumph Of Death is Tom Gabriel Warrior (vocals/guitar), André Mathieu (guitar/ vocals), Jamie Lee Cussigh (bass) y Tim Iso Wey (drums).
By far, this live album is a must have in your collection, The Black Shrine has already pre-ordered a copy, so go and buy it!
Thanks to Noise and BMG for providing me the digital promo in advance for my pleasure and joy, and of course for sharing with you, the followers of The Black Shrine.
And as Tom said during a previous interview… “Everything is better with two Gabriels”.
